Like the 55 yard line in the CFL, Saints let go of win
The iconic football field of the CFL features the 55 yard line at center. It's a win the league had in the bag and then let it go as they "Americanize" next season to a 100 yard field. The Spruce Grove Saints Hockey Club had the win in the bag Friday night, but they let the BC visitors take it.
Saints goaltender Joseph Quintilio proceeded to make numerous grade A saves while a seemingly disjointed offense tried to find their groove. Sometimes you compliment the other teams defense but that wasn't it tonight. It was like watching Cody Fajardo QB, some passes were behind, some were too far ahead, not enough received in stride.
A 3-1 lead dwindled to 3-2 and for the third consecutive home game the Saints took a late game penalty. This allowed Trail a 6-on-4 man advantage which culminated in Quintilio doing his best Stuart Skinner impression trying to stop a puck from his stomach and overtime.
On the Saints first powerplay of the game, Lucas Achim was left alone on an island in the slot opening the scoring. During a 5-minute powerplay, Spruce Grove actually lost momentum. Trail tallied their first goal of the game mere seconds after this successful penalty kill.
Patrick Woods' nose for net is earning him more and more ice time. He was rewarded with a goal. Junior Podein was getting roughed up along the boards all night but afforded a little extra room on the powerplay, he buried the opportunity. If anyone left after the second period they would have been shocked to find out this one got away.
All game long you could see Trail trying to provoke the provokable Felix Haibock. In overtime, Haibock went for two highlight reel attempted goals. On the second attempt, the rebound came out past Kohyn Pipke and the race the other way was on.
LINE UP NOTES, WHAT'S NEXT
The Saints welcomed back defenseman Brodie Kay after his one game suspension which put forward Owen Cronan back on the bench. Last game I was surprised Lucas Cilan waa scratched, he returned tonight which scratched Gavin McNeil, which is an even bigger surprise. Unfortunately Richard Krnac, in the photo beside the crutches, was on the receiving end of a kneeing major ending his night, and most likely weekend, early so McNeil or Cronan will probably draw back in for Saturday.
The Saints look to end their 3-game losing streak Saturday at 6pm hosting the Cranbrook Bucks. This is the Saints annual pink cancer night. The team will take warmups in pink jerseys which will then be auctioned off.
Cheers!
