September Walks to Consider: Sherwood Park Terry Fox and Celiac Edmonton
YES, that is me in the mascot suit. NO, this article will not be asking you to pledge or donate. This is the sharing of good times had volunteering and/or participating in these events. The Sherwood Park Terry Fox Run at Broadmoor Lake Park and the Celiac Edmonton Ride Walk Run held at Rundle Park are events, not infomercials, actual fun events.
The story behind the mascot, whether my boss at the Sherwood Park Crusaders was Spencer Love (currently the founder of Love Pro Wrestling), Adam Sergerie (currently a pro scout for the Vancouver Canucks) or Adam Girard (currently with the Cru), the players were always a part of this day held just beyond their home rink the Sherwood Park Arena. Last year was the first year as a participant (human not mascot) and was a 5 KM brisk walk with my sister.
The premise of the Terry Fox run is very serious but the day itself is filled with smiles, bonding, and memory making. You do not need to be a participant to make a difference on September 20th. A favourite memory walking along Sherwood Drive last year was traffic honking and shouting encouragement out their car windows. Be one of those people...enjoy yelling nice things out the car window!
Chronologically, the Celiac Ride Walk Run happens first. Typing this as a diagnosed Celiac of fourteen years, Terry Fox and Cancer Research deserves first mention. That is not downplaying the hell being Celiac can be when one of the allergens - barley, rye, oat, wheat - wreck havoc on our systems. It is respect to the man pictured on my five dollar bill going toward gluten free food.
This will be my first year walking the Rundle Park course, been a volunteer for the past handful of years. If you are still in the early years of being a Celiac, a visit to the site to chat with various vendors is highly recommended. Everyone I have ever volunteered with has always been willing to answer questions about the disease that is much more that just getting an upset tummy. Every year I go, something new is learned about making safe food taste delicious, my favourite example is using doritos instead of bread crumbs when making making meatloaf.
Long story short:
Create memories, check out the Sherwood Park Terry Fox Run on September 20th and or the Celiac Edmonton Ride Walk Run on September 12th. Cheers!
Side note: For the love shown the Sherwood Park Crusaders, you can read HERE that this upcoming hockey season will be my first as season ticket holder to the Spruce Grove Saints.
