Field goals don't win hockey games

The Edmonton Elks Football Club and Spruce Grove Saints Hockey Club have an important connection, the late Larry Thompson. Mr. Thompson and his family bought the Elks and his support of Spruce Grove hockey has the arena in Heavy Metal Place named the Thompson Family Arena. On the night the Elks needed a record nine (9!) field goals to win their football game, the Saints lost by more than a field goal (for none football fans that is more than three points).

The Saints needed to make at least one roster move heading into their matchup with the Okotoks Oilers as defenseman Brodie Kay was suspended for an illegal equipment infraction. For the first time this season the Club played with 13 forwards and 6 D instead of 12 & 7 with rookie forward Owen Cronan drawing in. Richard Krnac also drew in for Lucas Cilan.

Krnac had scoring opportunities on both the powerplay and penalty killing units. Comparing him to Cilan, Krnac is the more offensive minded while Cilan plays more of the "200 foot" game. Cronan had a much smaller role, as you'd imagine being the 13th forward, but had a wonderful scoring chance with five minutes remaining. Cronan also threw the body check a millisecond before Saints fans everywhere screamed "oh for fox lake!"

An Oilers dump in along the boards from center ice hit a stantion and redirects into the middle of the net. Beats the outstretched Saints goaltender Colten Scott who went to play the puck behind the net where it literally was intended to go. This made the score 4-0.

Goaltending on this night favored the Oilers as one has to give props to Justin Giguere. Junior Podein will attest to this as he had three grade a scoring chances turned aside by Giguere. Podein also watched the Oilers goalie rob Kohyn Pipke after a cross crease pass by him. Patrick Woods was also stonewalled multiple times during the game. The late shutout busting goal by the Saints was scored by Adam Perron. Ironically it was Perron who had the first good scoring opportunity of the game.

DISCIPLINE IS A PROBLEM 

Alexy Lachaine with a blatant hit from behind. 2 plus 10. After spending 18:51 in the box yesterday, this is not the way for a 2006 player to help his current team or future self.

Later in the game, Lachaine absorbs a hard hit along the board, Haibock takes a dumb, not even honorable, retaliatory penalty. Haibock had previously taken a penalty negating a Saints powerplay. This was during a 4-minute Okotoks penalty which Noah Taylor spent two minutes of in the box making it 4-on-4.

One loves that defenseman Cole Bent seemingly hits everything that moves but does not love the two penalties taken.

The Saints return home and hope to return to their winning ways with games on Friday and Saturday.

First Spruce Grove Saints game as a season ticket holder. Weird cheering for them ( here is why)  So excited for this season, actually attending an exhibition game. Coming from over a decade in Sherwood Park I absolutely love how bright Thompson Family Arena is! Impressed by both goaltenders, interested by the size difference between Colten Scott (listed at 5'11") and Joseph Quintilio (listed at 6'4"). Got a lot of Kohyn Pipke and Cole Bent as a defensive pairing. Both are listed under 6 feet, neither ever looked overmatched. Pipke caught a lot of my attention as he looked comfortable playing physical in all three zones. Big 6'7" Blair Erickson struggled the first half of the game seemingly always a second behind. The young man caught up to the game in the second half.  Nikolas Salo (he is from Singapore, the Tommy you are thinking off is from Sweden) was burned badly on Blackfalds' second goal but otherwise didn't look like someone getting their feet...

September Walks to Consider: Sherwood Park Terry Fox and Celiac Edmonton

  YES, that is me in the mascot suit. NO, this article will not be asking you to pledge or donate. This is the sharing of good times had volunteering and/or participating in these events. The Sherwood Park Terry Fox Run at Broadmoor Lake Park and the Celiac Edmonton Ride Walk Run held at Rundle Park  are events, not infomercials, actual fun events. The story behind the mascot, whether my boss at the Sherwood Park Crusaders was Spencer Love (currently the founder of Love Pro Wrestling), Adam Sergerie (currently a pro scout for the Vancouver Canucks) or Adam Girard (currently with the Cru), the players were always a part of this day held just beyond their home rink the Sherwood Park Arena. Ravenwood plus Boots and Hearts equals great summer

  The Ravenwood Music Festival  was held in Sherwood Park on the July 10th and 11th in Broadmoor Park. They bill themselves as the chillest music festival around and I am here to confirm that it is in effect the most laid back night(s) out you can have. You bring your own chair, you sit yourself down, enjoy. Well except for that bit in the middle of Pushing Ginger covering Roxette's "The Look" when everyone in attendance was told "get to your vehicles now, the storm we have been tracking is about to hit". Twenty minutes of mayhem later, the sun came out. We all felt like the itsy bitsy spider as mister sun dried everything up for us as we made our way back to catch the headliner.
