September 25th the music was better than the hockey

Back in July I made two decisions. The music fan in me, after seeing Secondhand Dreamcar at The Ravenwood Music Festival, bought tickets to their album release concert. The hockey fan in me bought Spruce Grove Saints season tickets. On September 25th the music was better than the hockey.


Secondhand Dreamcar is a 9 piece band, the brass section includes a saxophone, horn and trombone. Their debut album "Answer the Call" received multiple Canadian Blues Music Awards nominations and a JUNO nomination for best blues album. Their new album "Get Ready" released this weekend on Spotify and here is the link to the song "Get Ready". Secondhand Dreamcar live is an energy rush, the music is filled with varying cresendos and solos that leave you clapping in appreciation. 


Hockey news actually started the day as the Saints signed Cash Lanigan after one game in the WHL for the Prince Albert Raiders (which he earned himself a suspension for kneeing). Lanigan had played in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League last season but choose to leave the prairies and come to Alberta. He would slide into the starting lineup replacing someone who really impressed me last game in Owen Cronan. Defenseman Blair Erickson lost his roster spot entirely, hope we see him again soon although it may be as a member of an AJHL team.

The actual game...

Lanigan draws a penalty late in the third period putting the teams 4-on-4. Patrick Woods scored his first career BCHL goal during this moment. That put the score where it ended up, 5-2 for the defending champion Brooks Bandits.

London Taylor had his best period as a Saint in the third period and was rewarded with an assist on Gavin McNeil's first ever BCHL goal. The shutout busting goal may get reviewed and become Jacob Hamel's first ever BCHL goal.

Brooks opened the scoring in the closing moments of the opening period on a shot Saints goaltender Joseph Quintilio would like back. That is the only negativity being hurled at Joseph as he literally had a lot hurled at him during the game. Q faced 11 shots in the first period, he faced that many by the midpoint of the period which included a great save on a 2-on-1. Brooks ended up with 25 shots on goal in the second period and 51 throughout the game plus one more a few seconds after the final buzzer (a reminder why the Bandits are generally disliked outside of Brooks).

The tipping point in this game was when Kohyn Pipke, clearly on a mission to deliver a big hit, drew a kneeing major and automatic game misconduct. In the hullabaloo that always ensues after a big hit the Saints Alexy Lachaine was also assessed a 10-minute misconduct. Brooks made it 3-0 during this 5-minute powerplay advantage. 

Lachaine missed the final 8:51 of the game after being baited by the Brooks player he had cleanly and legally blown up. Earlier in the game linemate Felix Haibock drew himself a 10-minute misconduct and was the player who served Pipke's major. When 2/3 of your "top line" collectively serves 33:51 in penalty time, finishing with only 18 team shots tracks.

Secondhand Dreamcar is back in Edmonton Saturday. In Spruce Grove on November 7th and Brooks on March 3rd.

The Saints are in Okotoks Saturday night.

First Spruce Grove Saints game as a season ticket holder. Weird cheering for them ( here is why)  So excited for this season, actually attending an exhibition game. Coming from over a decade in Sherwood Park I absolutely love how bright Thompson Family Arena is! Impressed by both goaltenders, interested by the size difference between Colten Scott (listed at 5'11") and Joseph Quintilio (listed at 6'4"). Got a lot of Kohyn Pipke and Cole Bent as a defensive pairing. Both are listed under 6 feet, neither ever looked overmatched. Pipke caught a lot of my attention as he looked comfortable playing physical in all three zones. Big 6'7" Blair Erickson struggled the first half of the game seemingly always a second behind. The young man caught up to the game in the second half.  Nikolas Salo (he is from Singapore, the Tommy you are thinking off is from Sweden) was burned badly on Blackfalds' second goal but otherwise didn't look like someone getting their feet...

September Walks to Consider: Sherwood Park Terry Fox and Celiac Edmonton

  YES, that is me in the mascot suit. NO, this article will not be asking you to pledge or donate. This is the sharing of good times had volunteering and/or participating in these events. The Sherwood Park Terry Fox Run at Broadmoor Lake Park and the Celiac Edmonton Ride Walk Run held at Rundle Park  are events, not infomercials, actual fun events. The story behind the mascot, whether my boss at the Sherwood Park Crusaders was Spencer Love (currently the founder of Love Pro Wrestling), Adam Sergerie (currently a pro scout for the Vancouver Canucks) or Adam Girard (currently with the Cru), the players were always a part of this day held just beyond their home rink the Sherwood Park Arena. Ravenwood plus Boots and Hearts equals great summer

  The Ravenwood Music Festival  was held in Sherwood Park on the July 10th and 11th in Broadmoor Park. They bill themselves as the chillest music festival around and I am here to confirm that it is in effect the most laid back night(s) out you can have. You bring your own chair, you sit yourself down, enjoy. Well except for that bit in the middle of Pushing Ginger covering Roxette's "The Look" when everyone in attendance was told "get to your vehicles now, the storm we have been tracking is about to hit". Twenty minutes of mayhem later, the sun came out. We all felt like the itsy bitsy spider as mister sun dried everything up for us as we made our way back to catch the headliner.
